Honoring The Spirit of Luke By Supporting Victoria’s Aspiring Musicians
Victoria – The recent loss of Victoria musician, Henry “Luke” Rachwalski will be remembered with the help from the Victoria Foundation. To honor the spirit and passion Luke had for music, the family has established The Luke Rachwalski Memorial Fund.
“We know how challenging it was for Luke to continue on his path as a musician,” said Terry Rachwalski, Luke’s mother. “He was a committed artist with limited funds, like many struggling artists and we decided we wanted to help others follow their dream with the assistance of the Victoria Foundation.”
Securing suitable and affordable facilities in Greater Victoria to practice, record and perform, particularly studio recording space was an ongoing challenge for Luke and his musical contemporaries. The lack of performance venues for musicians is a continuing barrier to developing local musical talent in Victoria, particularly for under-age youth. The cost of musical training is often difficult for many young people who aspire to pursue music careers.
Luke died tragically early last month in an apartment fire in Montreal. He was an accomplished musician, poet and free spirit with a passion to follow his dream of playing music. He travelled last fall with his band Canvas across the country in a converted school bus and arrived in Montreal to make his mark in the city known for appreciating aspiring musicians and an alternative music scene. The band had only been there a few months when tragedy took one of their mates away forever. Luke was only 22 years old.
The Luke Rachwalksi Memorial Fund, administered by the Victoria Foundation, will help to support local young musicians like Luke. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation by credit card to the Victoria Foundation at 250 381-5532 or by cheque to the Victoria Foundation #109-645 Fort Street, Victoria, B.C., V8W 1G2 or online at www.victoriafoundation.bc.ca/blog/luke-rachwalski-memorial-fund.
A celebration of Luke’s life will be held Sunday, February 9th at Alix Goolden Hall, 907 Pandora, Victoria. Doors open at 3:30 p.m., with remembrances starting at 4 p.m., highlighted by performances of his favourite music and original songs by his musician friends.
